We are committed to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to live free from family violence and/or sexual assault in the State of Queensland, Australia.

OUR PURPOSE

Queensland Indigenous Family Violence Legal Service (QIFVLS) was formed after the recognition of a gap in access to legal and well-being support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims and survivors of domestic violence, family violence and sexual assault.

This gap has been evidenced by the fact that without this service, victims of family violence are either not seeking help, are not represented, or are not able to access the level of intensive and culturally appropriate assistance they need.

OUR VISION

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities in Queensland are supported to live free from family violence and/or sexual assault.

OUR MISSION

To address domestic and family violence and sexual assault of women, children and men by providing free legal and well-being support services through casework and more broadly through community education, reform and advocacy. Ensuring services are reflective of the cultural values of each community.

OUR VALUES

The guiding principles adopted ensure that we are well placed to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are victims/survivors of family violence or sexual assault include:

- Services must be accessible and appropriate for all victims/survivors of family violence or sexual assault, regardless of gender or age;

- All individuals have the right to be free from violence;

- Family violence is unacceptable;

- The community has a responsibility to work towards the prevention of family violence; and

- Community engagement and education is a key element in family violence prevention.

OUR HISTORY

Queensland Indigenous Family Violence Legal Service (QIFVLS) Aboriginal Corporation (“QIFVLS”) was established in 2009 when four (4) organisations became one through a “regionalisation” directive from what was our then funder, the Commonwealth Attorney Generals Department (“AGD”).

In addition to that, a further Brisbane LGA service specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women was incorporated into our structure in 2014 at the request of AGD, which included a partnership with the Queensland State Department of Justice and Attorney General (“DJAG”) through Legal Aid Queensland (“LAQ”).
